Nichi ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Nichi Japanese dictionary application and the website at nichijiten.com (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Service.

The Service is intended for users who are at least 13 years of age. By using the Service, you confirm that you are at least 13 years old.

Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Email address — collected when you make a purchase or submit the contact form.
  • Name — optionally provided through the contact form.
  • Message content — submitted through the contact form for support or feedback.

Information generated through purchases

  • Registration ID — a unique license key (e.g., NICHI-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) generated when you make a purchase. This is not a login credential.
  • Purchase details — the product purchased, payment status, and timestamps associated with your transaction.
  • Stripe identifiers — session, customer, and subscription IDs created by our payment processor to manage your transaction.

Information stored locally on your device

  • Theme preference — your choice of light or dark mode, stored in your browser's local storage.
  • Cached Registration ID — stored locally to improve your experience as a returning customer.

Information we do not collect

We do not use cookies, analytics, tracking pixels, device fingerprinting, or any form of usage tracking. We do not log your IP address. The core dictionary functionality works entirely offline and sends no data to our servers.

How We Use Your Information

  • To process and fulfill your purchases and deliver license keys.
  • To send transactional emails, such as purchase confirmations and license key delivery.
  • To respond to your support inquiries and feedback.
  • To verify and manage your license activations.
  • With your opt-in consent, to send occasional promotional emails about Nichi. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Nichi. Each processes data only as necessary to provide their service to us:

  • Stripe — payment processing. When you make a purchase, your email and payment information are processed by Stripe. Stripe's Privacy Policy
  • Convex — backend database and API infrastructure. Purchase records and registration data are stored on Convex. Convex's Privacy Policy
  • Resend — transactional email delivery. Your email address is shared with Resend to deliver purchase confirmations and license keys. Resend's Privacy Policy
  • Formspree — contact form processing. Information you submit through the contact form is processed by Formspree. Formspree's Privacy Policy

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes.

Data Retention

Purchase records and registration IDs are retained indefinitely for tax, legal, and license verification purposes. Contact form submissions are retained for as long as necessary to resolve your inquiry.

You may deactivate your registration within the Nichi app at any time. Server-side purchase records are retained as required by law.

Your Rights

All users

You may request access to the personal data we hold about you, request corrections, or request deletion of your data (subject to our legal retention requirements). To exercise these rights, email us at [email protected].

European Economic Area (GDPR)

If you are located in the EU or EEA, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation, including:

  • Right of access, rectification, and erasure.
  • Right to restrict or object to processing.
  • Right to data portability.

  • Right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Our legal bases for processing your data are: performance of a contract (purchases and license delivery), legitimate interest (responding to support inquiries), and consent (marketing emails).

  • Know what personal information we collect and how it is used.
  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell your personal information.

Children's Privacy

Nichi is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. Email Communications

We send transactional emails related to your purchases (license key delivery, purchase confirmations). These are necessary for the service and are not marketing communications.

If you opt in to receive promotional emails, every message will include an unsubscribe link. We honor unsubscribe requests within 10 business days. We comply with the CAN-SPAM Act.

Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your personal information, including the use of HTTPS encryption and secure third-party service providers. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

International Data Transfers

Your data is processed in the United States. If you are located outside the United States, including in the EU or EEA, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States. Our third-party service providers maintain appropriate safeguards for international data transfers, including Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
